Roose Local Ministry - Hubberston & Herbrandston

 Rev Andy  & Helen Bookless

 Andy Helen

Born of missionary parents, Andy grew up in India until he was 9, when his family returned to the UK.  He met Helen while studying Biblical Studies at Sheffield University, and it was in Sheffield that they were married in 1988, after both had later returned to live there.

Andy's call to ordination in the Church in Wales came as a result of 2 years spent working as a full-time volunteer Lay Assistant in 2 Anglican churches in Hirwaun, South Wales.  After training at St John's Nottingham, he was a Curate in Llantrisant and then Maesteg, and for the past 15 years has been the Vicar of 3 churches in the Parish of Bargoed and Deri with Brithdir in the Rhymney Valley, a former mining area between Caerphilly and Merthyr Tydfil.

Andy believes strongly in a Bible-based and Spirit-led approach to church life, and his particular interests include helping young people, families and the wider community connect with the church and with Jesus, and establishing the healing ministry of the church.  He is also keen to encourage every church member to use their God-given gifts and abilities.

Apart from work, Andy enjoys most sports, especially football, table tennis and cricket, and is a passionate Sheffield Wednesday supporter.  He also enjoys walking, and has more recently taken up researching family history.

Andy and Helen have 2 sons - Adam who studied Egyptian Archaeology at University College London  and is currently teaching English in China and Darren who is studying engineering at Cambridge.

Helen was born and grew up in Surrey and comes from a Methodist background but joined the Anglican Church when she married Andy.  In the last 20 years she has concentrated on bringing up the boys, supporting Andy's ministry and being involved in church and community life, including as a Lay Reader, but is aware that with an "empty nest" ahead this is a new season!  She enjoys music and is glad to be living near a cinema and theatre.

This is what he has to say about himself on Facebook!

"I am happily married with a wonderful wife and two boys I'm proud of. I also know an amazing God who I love so much ! Don't get me wrong ! I know what it is to go through tough times, but I'm so grateful for the life I have."
